Enhancing Development, Understanding Communication all through Education
At the Long Island Spectrum Center, we offer a powerful combination of a technology- based learning lab, with one to one and small group instruction - providing the next generation of education. Our students can enhance brain development, language, attention and focus, comprehension, motor planning, time on task, sequencing and more.
No child is the same and no brain is the same. Having the right tools to promote learning and individualize programs is an integral component of helping a child be the best they can be.
Education is the learning of knowledge, information and skills during the course of life and to truly educate requires integration, understanding and goals.
Programs in the Brain Development Lab range from basic level skills to collegiate. Each child is provided an individualized program based on their specified needs.
PROGRAMS
Blooming Kids
This is a set of programs designed to simulate applied behavior
analysis style instruction in a computer-based format. With programs such
as alphabet, animals, attributes, actions, numbers, letters, days of the
week, memory enhancement, now straining and different categories children
can work to achieve set goals and improve skills.
Earobics
This software provides individualized explicit instruction in all areas of
reading and language. As students engage with the software, the program
automatically adjusts based on each student’s individual strengths and
weaknesses. All instruction builds on the strength of each learner. With
interactive instruction, students can develop their skills, engage with
lively and structural characters and advance when they are ready to advance.
Play Attention
Harness the power of the mind. We often ask our children to pay attention,
but do we ever think about what that actually requires. What if we were able
to give children the opportunity to understand attention and focus in real
time? Now we can!
Play Attention is based on biofeedback training with education in mind.
Biofeedback training helps teach self-regulation and selective attention.
Individuals can learn the ability to focus on a task with more flexibility
and less distractibility in various environments including school and home.
Research shows that biofeedback helps individuals in areas of creativity,
attention, time on task, memory and reduces impulsivity.
Each Play Attention session is one to one with a trained Play Attention
coach motivating your child through each level. Scores are recorded for each
session for program adjustment and data collection.
The program addresses the following areas:
Attention And Focus:
These essential to success in school and inability to pay attention and stay
focused can result in reduced grades and inappropriate behavior in the
classroom.
Time On Task:
This is required to be able to complete school work assignments. It should
not take hours to do homework that normally should take 30 minutes. Not
finishing assignments and class will lead to bad reports from the teacher,
and poor grades.
Visual Tracking:
Is important to be able to follow what is written on the blackboard, and to
follow what the teacher is doing and she gives a lesson in class.
Discriminatory Processing:
Is the ability to filter out external noise and distractions in order to
stay focused on the primary stimuli. If your child has problems with
discriminatory processing, even the most minor noise or movement can lead to
substantial distraction.
Short-Term Memory:
Skills need to be developed to remember simple facts long enough so they may
transfer into long-term memory. Problems with short-term memory will often
lead to an inability to fulfill simple multistep tasks.
Reading Plus
The reading development program that helps to develop and improve upon
attention, concentration, short-term memory, literal understanding and the
rate at which students can read comfortably with excellent comprehension.
Beginner readers can work on visual skill readiness, phonemic awareness,
rapid decoding of words, word recognition and vocabulary competence. All
readers will work on attention and concentration, fluid silent reading,
perceptual accuracy, visual memory; can actual analysis and relative
comprehension.
Each child begins with a Visagraph; this screening is utilized to
objectively measure, record and evaluate the individuals reading efficacy
and effectiveness. Each individual reading performance is measured with the
Visagraph and then compared to others in the same peer group, based on the
system's national grade level normative data and goals. This visual analysis
of the persons five movements during silent reading help to provide unique
insights into the physical, perceptual and cognitive skills that determine
the ease and comfort with which one reads.
Once a Visagraph is completed a program can be established to address areas
of weakness. Students can play either onsite or via an internet seat in the
home. All lessons are supervised by a certified teacher.
Destination Success:
This program is designed to teach and enhance children the fundamental
skills in the areas of math and reading. A comprehensive research-based
literacy program that enables every child to succeed right from the start!
Incorporated relevant and inspiring reading and math course where it builds
understanding for all learners. The Destination programs can turn learning
necessary skills into fun!
Brain Train:
The cognitive training program that is the most comprehensive set of
computerized processing and skill development programs ever published. The
software programs contain many different levels of cognitive exercises
designed to help develop and remediate attention, concentration, memory,
eye-hand coordination, basic numeric concepts, problem solving, reasoning
skills, self-esteem and self-control.
Cognitive training program addresses the following:
Attention Skills
Memory Skills
Visual Motor Skills
Conceptual Skills
Logic Skill Work
Auditory And Visual Attention
Conceptual Reasoning
Fine Motor Speed And Control
Focused General Sustained Attention
Response Inhibition
Visual Perception
Visual Training
Visual Scanning And Tracking
